自由外汇又称现汇是指以外币表示的各种支付凭证，能够在国际市场上流通、转让,并能自由兑换成其他国家货币的外汇。
自由外汇也是指在国际金融市场上可以自由买卖，又称“现汇”、“多边结算的外汇”。广泛用于国际结算的外汇，可在国际上偿还，并可自由兑换成其他国家的货币。发行这些货币的国家对外汇的控制相对宽松。有的国家甚至基本取消了外汇管制，有的国家实行了严格的外汇管制。他们的本币不能自由兑换成国际通用的外币，并且规定他们的本票不能进出该国。
